Celebrating 35 Years of Music
On October 4, over 300 attendees enjoyed Mid-South Symphonic Band’s 35th anniversary concert and a reception afterward at Abba’s House in Hixson. This beautiful venue set the stage for a celebration of our history, our music and our musicians.
In 1990, a group of Rossville High School alumni were joined by alumni from Lakeview High School and the Mid-South Band was born. We have 12 members who were part of that very first band still playing with us today. They are:
Ed Bartley
Larry Chapman
Pete Fox
Cheryl Hornady
John Johnson
Debbie Johnson
Pattie Lane
Carol McDowell
Cindy McCashin
Mike Steakly
Roger Thomas
Becky Whaley
A special piece of music, “Flight of the Winds” by C. Foster Payne, was commissioned for the band’s 35th anniversary and premiered at the concert. Payne, himself a French Horn player and former member of the Mid-South Band, said he was drawn to the “intrinsic power and versatility of the ensemble itself, particularly the wind instruments. It is my sincere hope that this composition captures the spirit and vitality of the Mid-South Symphonic Band, celebrating their rich history and looking forward to their continued musical endeavors.”
Comment from a Mid-South fan:
I recently attended the 35th anniversary concert on October 4th and thoroughly enjoyed every selection as well as the narration by the Master of Ceremonies. It is a privilege to hear live music and by such an accomplished group of musicians. There is no substitute. I left feeling nourished and uplifted. Director Jones was such a pleasure to watch!
Thank you so much for making these concerts available. I'm glad you pass the baskets and give your audience a chance to thank you for this gift. I look forward to attending the December concert. - Jana
